What causes pancreatic cancer?

Pancreatic cancer occurs when the DNA in the cells of your pancreas change and make the cells behave abnormally. This abnormal behavior usually makes the cells in your pancreas grow uncontrollably, resulting in a tumor.

It’s not exactly clear what causes pancreatic cancer. However, there are some risk factors that may increase your risk of developing pancreatic cancer. These may include:

  • Smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Chronic pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
  • Certain genetic mutations
  • Family history of pancreatic cancer
  • Obesity
  • Older age

Maintaining a healthy weight and living a healthy lifestyle may help prevent or reduce your risk of developing pancreatic cancer.

What are the symptoms of pancreatic cancer?

Unfortunately, there are no early warning signs of pancreatic cancer. Most symptoms do not occur until the disease is at an advanced stage. Some symptoms can include:

  • Unusual abdominal pain
  • Loss of appetite or unusual weight loss
  • Yellowing of your skin or eyes (jaundice)
  • Light-colored stools
  • Dark-colored urine
  • Itchy skin
  • Fatigue

It is important that you talk with your healthcare provider about any of these symptoms that are new or do not go away.
