Types of bariatric surgery we offer
Sky Ridge Medical Center is proud to be the only hospital in Colorado that offers all five of the following procedures:
- Gastric plication
- Gastric sleeve
- Lap® Band and Realize® Band
- Roux-en-Y (RNY) gastric bypass
- vBloc neurometabolic therapy
Recovery varies for each surgery, but averages a one- to two-day hospital stay.
Gastric plication, also called laparoscopic greater curvature plication (LGCP), is an innovative weight-loss procedure that involves surgically folding the stomach in order to reduce its size without implants, cutting the stomach or using staples. Dr. Chae was the first bariatric surgeon in Colorado to offer this investigational, minimally invasive procedure for weight loss.
Typically, gastric plication is performed during a one- to two-hour surgery and patients are in the hospital for one to two days. Following surgery, patients are placed on special liquid diets (two to three weeks) and, over time, work toward eating a variety of solid foods, but in limited quantities.
- Initial studies have shown the gastric plication procedure to be effective, with the average patient losing 50 percent of his or her excess weight*
- Compared togastric band patients, gastric plication patients have fewer follow-up visits after surgery as there are no adjustments needed on an implanted device
- Stomach plication helps reduce the stomach size, restricting the amount of food that is able to be eaten (versus the gastric bypass procedure that uses malabsorption in order for patients to lose weight)
- This procedure may potentially be reversed or turned into another procedure, if necessary
Gastric sleeve, also known as vertical sleeve gastrectomy, is the surgical removal of a portion of the stomach to create a long tubular or “banana”-shaped stomach. This surgery involves surgical stapling, cutting and removal of stomach parts, but, unlike gastric bypass, it does not alter intestines. Unlike gastric banding surgery, gastric sleeve surgery also does not require adjustments after surgery or leave behind an artificial device inside the body.
Dr. Chae performs this surgery laparoscopically (minimally invasive) to minimize pain and speed up healing.
Lap® Band and Realize® Band (gastric-restrictive procedures)
Gastric-restrictive procedures involve placing an adjustable band around the stomach with the aid of a laparoscope (a tiny tool with a camera on it) in order to limit how much food enters the stomach. Gastric banding is recommended for patients who want to lose 50 to 120 pounds*. After 10 years, studies show that patients can maintain 50 percent of targeted excess weight loss.
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery (malabsorptive procedure)
The Roux-en-Y (RNY) gastric bypass procedure creates a small pouch to serve as the stomach, so you cannot eat as much. In a recent study with 125 patients, individuals who had the surgery lost 74 percent of excess weight in the first year, 78 percent in year two, 81 percent at year three, 84 percent by year four and by year five, 91 percent*.
vBloc neurometabolic therapy
Your body regulates weight through a complex process, each part "talking" to the others through brain and hormonal signals. The brain receives incoming messages and sends new instructions to your body in order to maintain what it feels is a healthy weight.
vBloc neurometabolic therapy is a new weight-loss option for people with a BMI of 35 to 39.9 with a health-related condition or a BMI of 40 to 45. vBloc therapy delivered through an implantable device called the Maestro system. This device intermittently blocks the signals between your stomach and your brain, keeping you from feeling hungry.
The Maestro system, a pacemaker-like device, is implanted by a metabolic and bariatric surgeon just under the skin, typically during an outpatient procedure that can be performed as a "same day" surgery. The procedure is performed laparoscopically, using up to five small incisions in the abdomen to implant the leads. The neuroregulator is implanted under the skin. During this procedure, the surgeon will also connect two device wires around your Vagus nerve in the area just above your stomach. Why is vBloc different?
Unlike other treatments, vBloc therapy does not prevent nutrient absorption or alter your anatomy. It just blocks hunger. Because the therapy directly targets your source of hunger, losing weight does not require you to change the foods you eat. vBloc is an active treatment that works throughout the day. It can be completely reversible and be deactivated or removed at any time.
Teen obesity weight-loss program
Childhood obesity in the U.S. has grown considerably in recent years, with 16 to 33 percent of children and adolescents now considered obese.
That's why the Bariatric Surgery Center at Sky Ridge created a new teen obesity weight-loss program. We have developed a comprehensive medical and surgical program that will provide nutrition, exercise and psychological counseling with the goal of giving your child the skills to reach and maintain a healthy weight for life.
In addition to surgery, we also offer a comprehensive medical weight-loss management program for teens who may not qualify for surgery but still need to manage their weight and improve their overall health.
Pants Across Sky Ridge
Pants Across Sky Ridge is an annual celebration that Sky Ridge hosts every January to honor those who have had life-changing bariatric surgery and wish to share their amazing weight-loss success stories. In addition to a special reception with friends and family, we display patients’ stories and "before" and "after" pants and photos in our lobby prior to the event.
Our visitors and employees are inspired by these heartfelt stories of triumph! We also select several patients to participate in our Marvelous Makeover, an exciting opportunity for a head-to-toe makeover with the "reveal" the evening of our Pants Across Sky Ridge reception!
Dr. Chae and his team know that results vary, so they will create a personalized treatment plan just for you.
